Hi,

no - it doesn't make any difference it seems. I've been doing some research on 
this issue actually & whilst most hand held's will have the same kind of issue 
- all be it at a low level, it would seem that this noise from the displays 
enters the signal not via the mics - by that I mean that you'd get it even if 
you had no mics plugged in or turned on. I assume its related to the fact that 
these are all small units with the electronics close to each other & without 
costly isolation / shielding. 

With this particular issue in mind perhaps folks could carry out a simple test:

plug in some external mics anyway, whack the gain & sensitivity as high as poss 
without feedback & record for 30 seconds.  (high gain etc only to make it 
easier to hear this low level electronic debris)  & then report back.

so far it appears to happen on (inc non-hand held recorders):

Roland R-26
Roland R-44
Tascam DR-660

but not on:

Korg MR2
Sound Devices 7 series recorders (of course)
