Well i agree with Bret, Dan and Chuck!

Powered is definatly the way to go and all the reasons that hav
already been explained. As far as gettin that low end freq., in your
case, you do want to prbably avoid a sub. cossovers and poor base
managment can get you into trouble and could get you away from that
true sound recording. But if you're tring to go for that movie feel
it in the gut experience then I would say check out a sub. If you're
looking for something on a extreme end check Bag End www.bagend.com.
And if you ever need anything to get you into those high feqs check
out the tannoy ellipse 8 and there super tweeters.
Chuck: jealus! I've always wanted to hear the active's

believe, set out good reasons to avoid subwoofers in the interest of
accurate reproduction. IOW, get one for movies, but not for music.
The reason was that almost all external crossover systems are
inadequate. Getting an accurate balance with two speaker systems was
virtually impossible.

Active 20's (which I own) or Active 40's, both of which are no
longer made. I bought mine used and they are excellent speakers. The
20's are bookshelf sized (although very heavy) and they sound as
good as anything I heard up to the $5000 category. Yeah, sounds
impossible, but.....
