Walt,
I have been using the Tannoy system 600a powered monitors for quite
some time.  http://www.tannoyna.com/professional/index.html

They are internally biamped (70w per driver), using two TDA7294V power
op amps in each speaker.=20
The amp sections sound surprisingly good (and noise free), as do the
speakers.=20
I triamp these with a BSS FDS310 active crossover (~65 hz, 24db/oct) to
a Rotel RB1080 200 watt/channel power amp to passive Acoustat stereo
subwoofers.
I like not having to have so many external amps, and that I can use a
balanced signal from my roland vs2480, to BSS crossover, to tannoys,
and to the rotel.
It is true, little speakers have low end limits, especially at high
volume, low distortion. Such is the physics of sound.
