ground loops do not cause hiss, you get a hum. (50hz or 60hz & it's harmoni=
cs)
If transfering from cassettes, *most* soundcards/usb interfaces will be fin=
e and it's debatable that you'll hear any difference with 16bit vs 24bit 'c=
ause of the limited dynamic range of the source material, so save some disk=
 space (if it's limited) and transfer at 16bits.
 I second using audacity to edit, it's free and my only regret is that I sp=
ent my hard earned money on protools all thoses years ago..

ps: don't forget to get a good set of monitor speakers before you start to =
clean up your recordings (if you plan to do major editing) as your usual co=
mputer speakers can't be relied on.
