Good luck with your transfer project Dale. I want to mention something that=
 you might want to investigate.

Like you I have about 500 cassettes with speech data that were made before =
I switched to CD recording. I analyzed about 65 of my old tapes and transfe=
rred portions to digital copies. I was disappointed that the "print through=
" was a large problem, because loud passages caused difficulty in the lower=
level speech sections. I dread rerecording the remaining programs. You mig=
ht listen to your old programs to see whether they are still "high quality,=
" because you might have as difficult time as I anticipate.

Transferring cassettes

I have not made recordings in a while and have a collection of
cassettes.
I'm considering buying a new digital recorder and resuming recording
activities and wonder if any of these recorders would be suitable for
transferring directly from a cassette deck.
Much advice has been offered through this forum regarding new
equipment for actual recordings, but it would be nice to know if
anyone has had experience using any of this gear for digitizing analog
tapes. I don't want to involve extra equipment attached to my computer
if I don't have to.

Thanks,
Dale Hoffman
