I chose the MKH50 over the 40, just out of preference, because my Schoeps are similiar (using an MK41 instead of an MK4). I'm used to it. I like the slightly wider 'stereo' if you will, and since my use is often for film work, having a slight hole in the middle, or wider stereo, often works better for me. But I don't think the difference is massive. I would be curious to try a 30/40 and a 30/50 side by side sometime. I know Bernie uses 30/40 combos, which for pure listening, probably provides a more uniform even stereo image. The cardiod should be slightly better off axis too, which when recording MS, is important. I do like having a hypercariod center though, since also if I need to record some FX in mono, I find a hypercardiod slightly more usable than a cardiod. I know some people are even using a 30/60 combo. I think either is perfectly safe. Tim |
