For lite travel, I will use either a pair Telinga clip-ons, a pair of DPA40=
60s omni lavs, or even a pair of Sony ECM55Bs (altho this last pair can be =
noisy).

Tie a string around a tree the diameter of which approximates the distance =
between your ears.

Fasten the lavs at 180=B0 opposite, and you=92ll have some pretty decent st=
ereo (and in some habitats, what approaches binaural imaging).

If it=92s windy, Dan Dugan once gave me a piece of fuzzy material that work=
s pretty well in all but places with the most serious gusts. (You=92ll need=
to ask him what it was). I=92ve been recording with this kind of mic setup=
since 1984 and it=92s damned convincing.

For recording gear that includes either my Olympus LS-10 or Zoom H4n, I alw=
ays add a Sound Devices Mix-Pre in the loop to cut down on record noise. Wh=
en we worked together on a project in the UK a few years ago, Chris Watson =
introduced me to that elegant solution.

Happy holidays, all. Here=92s to a critter-song-filled coming year,
Bernie
