The wind's been blowing through the forest around here so I wasn't able to =
get out to do the tree ears test you were looking for, Peter. But I did get=
out and try bag ears down at the coast yesterday.

irds https://soundcloud.com/tnbenedict/sass-vs-bag-ears-hapuna-bay-south-wi=
th-birds

The picture associated with the track shows the overall setup. The EM-172 =
lavs were clipped to either side of my sound bag, which was then slung from=
a rock behind and a little below the SASS. The mic on top is the M-S Alice=
I've been dinking with. I was about ten feet above the water.

Waves really aren't the best subject to test for localization. That'll hav=
e to wait until the wind dies down and I can stick these on a real tree. Bu=
t the difference in tone was kind of neat to listen to. Both of these use t=
he same capsules, so all the differences in tone come from how the mics are=
mounted, not from the capsules themselves. I hadn't really appreciated how=
much of a boost the higher frequencies get in the SASS.

A group of birds was calling off to one side during the test. Not the best=
conditions for deciding how wide a stereo image you're getting, but it's e=
nough to give some clues. I don't know if it's as wide an image as the SASS=
, but the bag ears certainly created a wider image than the M-S microphone =
I also tested that day.

I'll post a tree ears test as soon as the wind dies down and I can get out=
 with my gear.
