Actually, the EM172 capsules are omni.

One needs to use the EM184 capsules to get a cardiod pattern and that is re=
quired to  do ORTF.  Don't use the the EM172s for that purpose.

That being said, there are ways to record with spaced omni capsules (just s=
eparated in the air), but although the result may be useful, it will sound =
differently than ORTF.

Make some recordings and experiment. Tune things until it sounds good to yo=
ur own ears.
