I built an EM-184 ORTF rig a while back. Here's the write-up on it: =0D

d-ortf/ https://tombenedict.wordpress.com/2016/08/05/clippy-em184-cardioid-=
mics-and-ortf/ =0D
=0D
It uses two EM-184 capsules in Clippy bodies from FEL Communications. Thos=
e are then clipped to a bar that has slots at the right spacing/angles to a=
rrange the mics in ORTF. It's pretty quick to use in the field.=0D
 =0D
=0D
Since writing that article I cut away a lot of the center of the bar and a=
dded two more clip slots to arrange the mics in X-Y.=0D
 =0D
=0D
That's the ORTF setup I used when I compared it against my EM-172 SASS:=0D

gs-insects-cattle-and-reverb =0D
=0D
It's a little narrower sounding than the SASS, but not as narrow as the M-=
S rig I've been testing recently.=0D
 =0D
=0D
For picking up forest reverberation I like the SASS more. But for rain I f=
ound the ORTF setup to be more focused. It didn't pick up quite as much of =
the background hiss of rain drops on the forest canopy, and picked up more =
of the drops hitting near the mics. That doesn't really come out in that te=
st, unfortunately.=0D
 =0D
=0D
I think a dedicated EM-182 or EM-184 ORTF rig could be built that would be=
quite compact. More so than my Clippy mics and the aluminum bar I'm using.=
The one caution is that I've found cardioid capsules care a lot about the =
space around them and any obstructions front-to-back. They also seem to be =
a lot more sensitive to wind. Wind protection would need to be an integral =
part of the design.=0D
 =0D
=0D
Have fun with your build, Jim. Looking forward to hearing your results!=0D
