Simon,

I've used camera tripods (tall and short) for mounting a mic. It is
much more stable than a conventional mic stand provided it dosn't
rattle or flap. If you are following a bird with a long gunmic, the
camera pan aand tilt head comes in handy.

The standard amateur camera thread is 1/4" and I made my own adaptor
from a strip of aluminium to take a 5/16" short bolt. Look out for mic
stand adaptors which could be modified with a 1/4" threded hole.

For instance Maplin UK do an adaptor which would make two 1/4"
converters.
