Again, there IS an important difference in these different applications:
The absolute sound pressure levels picked up by the microphone is
usually much higher when recording a violin, an orchestra or a news
reporter. Ocean waves might also be loud, but there are probably no
really quiet intervalls between them that would justify a dynamic
range of more than 90dB...
