<<Stockham, inventor of digital audio recording, found that 50K was the optimum sample rate--anything more would be overkill.>> This is pretty similar to the conclusion of the folks at Pacific Microsonics (designers of the HDCD mastering process) who determined that 64k was the point beyond which no further audible benefit was attainable.
