I get Klas's point regarding an acoustic 'sweet spot' where room nodes
converge and phase relationships get confused at the capsule.
Looking back at Romilly's set-up description the mics were not in coinciden=
t
placement
but some distance apart with the singer some 3 feet from 'her' mic, but no
mention of how far apart the mics themselves were.
That would be a mighty big 'sweet spot' and would show up with other mics
regardless of directivity.
She also says they worked ok with the Portadisc so the idea of the R4 not
being able to match
up to it phantom power wise seems to be on the button.
I they work ok sometimes but not others, logic says it cant be the mics
themselves.........
As Volker says
he has an Edirol R-4 and two Sennheiser MKH20 and have never had
any of the problems you describe.
Maybe it is a phantom power problem on your R4 that only applies when hooke=
d
up to the MKH20's.
Perhaps you can get it 'serviced to spec' under warranty.
Ill say goodnight now
cheers BigRog
