Hi Romillyh,
I have both an Edirol R-4 and two Sennheiser MKH20 and have never had
any of the problems you describe.
I also have a pair of Audio Technica AT3032 which sound good, but the
MKH20 are far superior.
I do not have any A-B comparison samples, but I can assure you that I
can not confirm your experiences.
I have never had them sound like old tin boxes :-)
