Sorry to disappear - was down in the Kentish bush away from my
computer and means to do website.
It does seem there may be a problem using the Sennheiser MKH 20 with
the Edirol R4 recorder. The mics were perfectly ok with a Portadisc
but the problem recurred with the R4 despite a change of leads and
batteries.
My three other mics work fine with the R4: AT 3032, Rode NT1-A and
Telinga Stereo DAT.
For anyone who can bear it I've set out samples on my Sennheiser page
in a way that I hope will allow those more expert than myself to
eliminate various possible explanations. The samples are all new
(including a couple of bird ones along with the musical stuff) and may
give a little pleasure and entertainment in return for the kind
interest of those who venture there! The url is as before:

Only recommended for broadband users. Unfortunately that's all I can
do on the mkh 20s for now as I've had to return them - tant pis. Maybe
someone else can hitch a pair to a R4 and see what happens?? It'd be
good/bad to know if mine is malfunctioning.
