That mkh's will usually run on lower phantom
voltage also supports Volker's assessment.
Romilly, do you have two pairs of mics you can
rotate between the R-4's four inputs? You might
be able to get another pair of mics sounding bad.
If so, then route the bad pair through an
external pre into the R-4's line inputs and see
if it goes away. You might have to load it up
with four mics. One would think that large
diaphragm mics would be the first to reveal poor
performance associated with phantom powering
