why not look a dynamics? microphones like the
sennheiser md421 and the beyer m88 are extremely low
noise. they are low output so you need very high
quality preamps, but they are much quieter than any
condensors, and they are very very rugged - especially
the 421. i have a 30 year-old 421 that has never given
me trouble. (i have also dropped a nakamichi cm 300
into the river once, and it recovered after a few
hours, but i could not use it while wet.)
