The Oade Brothers had this to say about the Marantz PMD 660:

We may not carry that as it has a 65dB signal to noise ration, too noisy
for most uses except transcription. The PMD671 is expected to ship in
May and be a 24 bit box, we hope this one has usable mic preamps !

I throughly agree about CF media cost and
limitations on trips. $500 for a 16bit CF
recorder with phantom the main feature,.. I'd
consider a NH800 for $220 and $450-550 for a used
MP-2 if there was any chance the person wanted to
make recordings under quiet conditions. The Sony
may provide some plusses like $6 1GB discs,
optical in and several hours on one A bat. If
your friend has hot condenser mics, there's also
the very compact Deneck PS-2 which provide 48
volts phantom on batteries for $180. The 660
looks easier to operate, e.g. big buttons. Rob D.
