That's what I said ... the 660's 65dB noise spec
is likely to be at full gain.  I wonder what it's
like at minimum gain for the use with the Earthworks
mics.  They're hot mics and I used to run them into
the line-in of a Sony TCD-D8 with and external phantom
supply and unity-gain balanced-to-unbalanced buffer amp.
For loud music it was fine.  I'd like to run them into
a single battery-powered box rather than have 2 or 3
boxes cabled together (or need AC power).

I still haven't tested the Edirol R-1 with PIP mics
of better quality than the built in ones.

Just for yucks here's 20 seconds of the R-1's internal mics,
down-sampled from 24 to 16 bits by Apple Quicktime:
