Minidisc rumors are with us for all time. Folks will eagerly pass on any
bad news uncritically, but will give good news the third degree and the
rubber hoses and still not pass it on. Think about gossip, it's not
about the good stuff.
I did only what anyone with a digital recorder should be able to do. I
expect it will vary in pattern, but the sonogram of the result of
clipping of any level is not pretty. The lesson is if you see clipping,
you did it. Set the bloody gain a little lower next time. Don't whine
about the equipment being flawed (though failed hardware is always
possible). I still record with clipping sometimes. Some of it is
deliberate as the only way to get a rare call, but other times it's
because I tried to push the gain above where I knew it should be. I keep
telling myself how stupid I am when that happens. And try to do better
next time. Make every goof a learning experience.
I generally check out anything like this. I'm a little embarrassed I
spent years thinking Cornell had something on the original ATRAC before
critically examining it.
