While not a direct solution to your problem, I've recently re-started
a project that may be relevant to your question.
I'm transfering all my DAT or MD recordings to audio CD, writing via
digital transfer to an HHB stand-alone burner. Once the data is on
CDR, I can copy it high speed onto computer hard drive using iTunes,
Toast Audio Extractor, EAC, etc. And--critical for my purposes--the
track ID makers I made in the field or later, translate into
individual files after they are extracted to my computer.
Then comes the manual task of database logging, etc. While this does
not address the second half of your problem, fining the interesting
bits, it does give you a way to make the computer transfers in a
pretty-hands-off way, plus you get another media type (CDR) as an
archival backup--preferably one that would be stored off-site.
