you might have a look at the Laar TDM 7. It is a relatively cheap bat
detector that has specifically been designed for long-term monitoring of ba=
t
activity. It generates a timer signal (a short sound burst every 15 minutes=
) that
enables the subsequent reconstruction of the original time scale in voice
activated recordings using cheap dictation machines:

Another more elaborate solution would be to use an old laptop in conjunctio=
n
with a special recording software that supports sound-activated recording.
The laptop could be very slow (a processor running at 100 MHz might do the
job). However, the major problem would be the power supply. Large lead-acid
batteries are required to operate such a setup over longer periods of time.
