As far as I know that's pretty much the criteria. If the mic noise turns
up first then the pre is not too noisy. The only other one is if the pre
is coloring the sound in some unwanted way. Or it clips before the mic.

It's always a balance of the characteristics of the mic and pre. If they
are matched it's fine, if not, even the best will not do well.
