Any transformer, virtually any audio device for that matter, colors the
sound. It's not a major or bad thing with quality equipment, but is one
of the reasons certain models of equipment fall into favor. People get
so used to the particular coloring they get they think it's "normal" or
"clean" or "transparent" and anything else is abnormal. A entire preamp,
even a built in one is the same way. People will call certain ones bad,
simply because they don't quite sound like others. Or because the
settings for the same gain are different on the knobs, or all kinds of
other reasons.
Of course you can have overt badness, like the phantom power problems
you have reported.
