Today I was looking at some distant birds and I was too lazy to get the
scope out. Not being sure about some cormorants I just took a photo though a
Lumix Panasonic FZ50. I ten looked at them on a computer screen. The result,
Pied Cormorants rather than Little Pied, and as a bonus I discovered a
distant flock of white dots were Stilts.
It is no different to either seeing a bird, but having to check a field
guide at home to distinguish, or hearing and then listening to a tape to
make sure.
If you only had a fleeting glimpse, but people with you got a better view
and identified it, I take it, with some unhappiness - it was my only
Spectacled Owl.

Dave...It all comes down to how you define things. If you are talking about
a list of birds you have seen, then I definitely would not tick it. Just
because a bird has been in your field of vision doesn't mean you have seen
it. Imagine if you were with a group of birders and they later said to you:
"Did you see the Black Noddy?" and you replied, "No", and then they said:
"Well, you were looking right at it!" You wouldn't tick it on the strength
of that would you? I think that, semantically, saying you have "seen"
something implies a conscious perception at the time of seeing. You have
'seen' a Black Noddy in your photograph, that is all. My opinion.

Some of you may have read my recent posts about a trip to Michelmas
Cay last week and the fact that i didn't see any Black Noddy's.
Well I am just going through my photos in more detail and i have
found a Black Noddy in a photo!!
Does it count as a tick or not??
