Hi Dan

Like you after years of just recording with the built in mikes on my iPhone=
s or my Olympus DM10, I decided less that a month ago to up my game and pur=
chase a sennheiser me66 + the obligatory powering module ?ke-6? I forget th=
e model number. I have about 500$ invested in the mike kit with the connect=
ing cable for the iphone. To date my products have only gone to XenoCanto a=
nd that is all I really have interest in.

I don't feel as if I really know how everything works yet but the handling =
noise is quite frustrating. And it is really sensitive to wind. So now I'm =
considering getting the handle and balloon and fur. The cost of these items=
is another 500+. Now I'm questioning the wisdom of posing as a pro. I was =
more fun to just whip out my phone and begin recording.

Sure the mike impressively limits side noises but you have to have the gain=
all the way up to get the quiet noises that we like getting and with the g=
ain all the way up it is frustrating to hear so much hiss.

So for me the jury is still out on whether it is worth the added bulk.

Best of luck. Try to borrow a kit and watch a lot of youtube videos of the =
me66 in action.

Flock on!

I have a Tascam DR-05 recorder. I am primarily interested in recording bird=
s but also want to record mammals, and to be able to conduct interviews. I =
have a limited budget, so something used would be preferable. What do you a=
ll recommend?

r years. When I heard a handful of bird vocalizations this summer which had=
n't been uploaded to xeno-canto, I realized that now is the time. It would =
be very useful to always have a recording setup in my pack for such situati=
ons.
