Dan,
I have had good luck with my RODE NTG-2 It runs on a battery or phantom po=
wer, and in your case, the AA battery is most useful. They are resonably p=
riced, and are worth looking at. I use mine for the same purposes you have=
indicated - birds, nature, and interviews but with a Marantz PMD-661mkII r=
ecorder, and I have seen them for $249.00 new very recently. The RODE NTG-=
2 came highly recommended to me by a documentary filmmaker friend who has u=
sed many more expensive microphones. I also paired mine with the K-Tek Nau=
tilus Shock Mount and the RODE WS6 windshield.
Good luck,
Scott

I have a Tascam DR-05 recorder. I am primarily interested in recording bird=
s but also want to record mammals, and to be able to conduct interviews. I =
have a limited budget, so something used would be preferable. What do you a=
ll recommend?

be very useful to always have a recording setup in my pack for such situati=
ons.
