the t power microphone is the easiest to modify for unbalanced working. it =
will work on a 9-volt battery and=C2=A0needs just one 220 ohm resistor and =
50 mfd capacitor. (I think I published the circuit here or=C2=A0on mic buil=
ders many years ago).

I'd like to buy a shotgun microphone to get set up for nature recording. I =
have a Tascam DR-05 recorder. I am primarily interested in recording birds =
but also want to record mammals, and to be able to conduct interviews. I ha=
ve a limited budget, so something used would be preferable. What do you all=
 recommend?

I was going to suggest a used Sennheiser MKH 416, but the phantom (P48) ver=
sion is selling on eBay around $800. There was an MKH 416T, the obsolete T-=
power one, for $500, but you'd have to add a $150 power supply to that.
Which goes to show that the best microphones are a good investment; quality=
-wise they put your money where it counts, and they keep their value.
