That's odd to me, since the figures I have shows the Tascam DR-40
to have 15 dBu louder noise floor than the Olympus LS-5/10/11.
Which is a lot!

To me, the logic seems to be either: A. Buy a good XLR
capable recorder and get by with a lesser microphone now B. Buy
a good microphone and get by with a lesser recorder for now If
you go with the first option, you could get your Sennheiser
ME67/K6 and get by with an Olympus LS recorder for now. When you
are ready, you could move up to a quieter XLR capable recorder.
(I suggested the Tascam as a recorder roughly equivalent to the
Olympus but with XLR capability). If you go with the second
option and buy the Marantz, you could get by with a less
expensive microphone for now (although if you go too cheap on
mics the quality drops off fast!) and upgrade the microphone when
you can. But I don't see the point in buying a more expensive
non-XLR recorder now. If you do that you are guaranteeing you
will have to replace both the recorder and the mic. Buy the
cheaper recorder and learn the craft. Like with camera gear,
good field craft trumps good gear. You will be able to get some
outstanding recordings of owls and other birds with an Olympus
LS-12 or similar recorder.

Jacek, I might offer another suggestion that could meet
all of your needs now and give you room to step up later. I
recently purchased a Tascam DR-40 recorder based on some
favorable reviews I had read. My previous recorders were an
Olympus LS-10 and Olympus LS-11 but I wanted to move up to an
phantom power XLR connection without breaking the bank. I have
used all three of these recorders with their built in mics and
with a Sennheiser ME66/K6 combo. I have found the Tascam DR-40
to be a little bit quieter than the Olympus. I am no audiophile,
certainly, but when I record with both recorders side by side
(built in mics) I generally don't see a huge difference in sound
quality and if I observe any difference at all I think the Tascam
gives me cleaner, quieter audio than the Olympus LS-11. You
might ask yourself if you really need the extra reach of the ME67
over the ME66. For birds that are more distant, you might be
happier with a parabolic microphone setup instead of a shotgun
anyway. I have recorded quite a few owls with the ME 66.. So
for a little bit more than the LS-12, you could buy a Tascam
DR-40 and still buy the ME67/K6 combo. So with the Tascam and
the ME combo you would have phantom powered XLR connected
microphone capability and get the benefit of having a 4 channel
recorder. You could also use non-phantom powered microphones
(with XLR jacks) if needed. Then you could "move up" later by
either getting new mics or a new recorder without having to worry
about getting new cables, phantom power, etc.. Certainly worth
a look? I happened to get my Tascam DR-40 on sale for $173 so
look around if you are investigating. Chris

In first line owls and then other birds. I think the first
solution is better because of xlr (in the future I could change
