thank U. Your analysis is very clear and logical.=C2=A0I decide to buy a be=
tter microphone and=C2=A0cheaper=C2=A0recorder without xlr - sennheiser me6=
7/k6 with sony pcm m10. U think this set is ok?=C2=A0

ne-dilemma

=C2=A0
=C2=A0To me, the logic seems to be either:
A.=C2=A0 Buy a good XLR capable recorder and get by with a lesser microphon=
e now
B.=C2=A0 Buy a good microphone and get by with a lesser recorder for now
=C2=A0
If you go with the first option, you could get your Sennheiser ME67/K6 and =
get by with an Olympus LS recorder for now.=C2=A0 When you are ready, you c=
ould move up to a quieter=C2=A0XLR capable recorder.=C2=A0 (I suggested the=
Tascam as a recorder roughly equivalent to the Olympus but with XLR capabi=
lity).
=C2=A0
If you go with the second option and buy the Marantz, you could get by with=
a less expensive microphone for now (although if you go too cheap on mics =
the quality drops off fast!) and upgrade the microphone when you can.
=C2=A0
But I don't see the point in buying a more expensive non-XLR recorder now.=
=C2=A0 If you do that you are guaranteeing you will have to replace both th=
e recorder and the mic.
=C2=A0
Buy the cheaper recorder and learn the craft.=C2=A0 Like with camera gear, =
good field craft trumps good gear.=C2=A0 You will be able to get some outst=
anding recordings of owls and other birds with an Olympus LS-12 or similar =
recorder.

=C2=A0
Jacek,
=C2=A0
I might offer another suggestion that could meet all of your needs now and =
give you room to step up later.=C2=A0 I recently purchased a Tascam DR-40 r=
ecorder based on some favorable reviews I had read.=C2=A0 My previous recor=
ders=C2=A0were an Olympus LS-10 and Olympus LS-11=C2=A0but I wanted to move=
up to an phantom power XLR connection without breaking the bank.=C2=A0 I h=
ave used all three of these recorders with their built in mics and with a S=
ennheiser ME66/K6 combo.
=C2=A0
I have found the Tascam DR-40 to be a little bit quieter than the Olympus.=
=C2=A0 I am no audiophile, certainly, but when I record with both recorders=
side by side (built in mics) I generally don't see a huge difference in so=
und quality and if I observe any difference at all I think the Tascam gives=
me cleaner, quieter=C2=A0audio than the Olympus LS-11.
=C2=A0
You might ask yourself if you really need the extra reach of the ME67 over =
the ME66.=C2=A0=C2=A0 For birds that are more distant, you might be happier=
 with a parabolic microphone setup=C2=A0instead of a shotgun anyway.=C2=A0 =
I have recorded quite a few owls with the ME 66..=C2=A0
=C2=A0
So for a little bit more than the LS-12, you could buy a Tascam DR-40 and s=
till buy the ME67/K6 combo.=C2=A0 So with the Tascam and the ME combo you w=
ould have phantom powered XLR connected microphone capability and get the b=
enefit of having a 4 channel recorder.=C2=A0=C2=A0 You could also use non-p=
hantom powered microphones (with XLR jacks) if needed.=C2=A0
=C2=A0
Then you could "move up" later by either getting new mics or a new recorder=
without having to worry about getting new cables, phantom power, etc..
=C2=A0
Certainly worth a look?=C2=A0=C2=A0 I happened to get my Tascam DR-40 on sa=
le for $173 so look around if you are investigating.

Hi,
What do you think is better - buy marantz pmd 661 + rode ntg-2 or buy cheap=
er recorder like olympus LS-12 or sony PCM 10 but with Sennheiser K6/ME67. =
Which solution will give me better sound quality? I might add that I am mos=
t interested in recording owls. In first line owls and then other birds. I =
think the first solution is better because of xlr (in the future I could ch=
ange the microphone) , but if you have other experiences, suggestions and t=
