I think if I was in your situation, I would do the following (in spite of m=
y previous recommendation of the DR-40). I would go for a quieter XLR cap=
able recorder like the Tascam DR-100mkii. It is only a little bit more exp=
ensive than the DR-40 but much quieter.
I would make up the difference in the recorder cost by getting the Sennheis=
er K6 and ME66 instead of the 67. I think the difference between these two=
shotguns would not make a big difference when recording owls at night unle=
ss you are a really long way away and then your problem will be noise betw=
een you and the owl and behind the owl rather than off to the sides.
I have recorded owls on several occasions with the ME66. Here=E2=80=99s on=
e with the Olympus LS-10 and the ME66 =E2=80=93

And if the focus of the shotgun is really that crucial to your recording, y=
ou would probably be better off with a parabolic microphone setup anyway.
