I've got to add to this argument about wasted phantom power. From
memory the current draw with a MKH series is 5 ma. If that comes from
a 48V source that is a total of 250 milliwatts which is not going to
warm anything up. In fact out of doors on damp nights you could do
with a mic warmer to stop condensation. :-)

Just to put a tin lid on it, the MKH's spec says 10V minimum, that's
50 mw. A flashlight is about 1000mw.

The other thing with phantom power is that it uses a balanced line, so
any noise coming from a power source or battery cancels out.
