I have not used the ME66 a lot, but made lots of AB recordings (and
parabol) with the ME62.
I agree that 16 dbA is a reasonable value, not only because the self
noise is "good enough," but also because it is hard to find a mic in
the same price range which is quieter, except NT1A which many find
too bulky + needs phantom power.
Remember that balanced outputs (XLR's) are used to eliminate hum
induced from mains cables indoors. So it is smart of Sennheiser to
make a microphone with balanced output and phantom power + also make
it running from a battery.
I can measure the 1,5 - 2 dbA lower self noise of the Telinga
Clip-On's, compared to ME62, but I cannot hear it. That my hearing
nowadays drop dead above 16kHz, is not important, as the most
disturbing noise is in the region 2- 10 kHz.
I will also point out (again!) that I frequently have customers
complaining about self noise, while the problem is that they have
headphones / loudspeakers made to emphasize effects in pop music, not
to speak about all people having their PC loudspeakers only.
