Hi Emil--
Too bad. At least there are no mysteries.
Its my understanding that the measurement of mic
self-noise _is_ difficult to do, especially in
useful, perceptual terms for demanding
applications.
Even when the numbers are very accurate, the
coloration of the self-noise and the noise
masking abilities of the sound subjects are large
"quality" factors that are much easier to hear
than put into numbers. All I know to do is to
compare the gear combinations in question in
appropriate field conditions and judge the
results by ear.
Yes, the 14dB(A) self-noise figure for my
603/KA100 D's seemed realistic to me based on an
early comparison test I made with an mkh-40 [12
dB(A)], a CAD-179 [optimistic 11 dB(A)] and maybe
an AKG-414. I also remember that the sensitivity
rating of 12 mV/Pa seemed too low in comparison
to the other mics in this sensitivity range. I'd
characterize the KA100 D's self-noise coloration
as mostly above 4KHz and their overall tonal
balance as "bright" compared to other popular
omnis like the MKH-20 and AT3032/4022's. Rob D.
