Sorry for the confusion here, I never meant to say that the Tascam's
preamps are noisy, just that they're 'noisier' than those in my HHB,
and definitely noisier than the ones in my Lunatec or my Sound Devices
722. This should be expected, my Lunatec cost $1500, and is a very high
quality dedicated preamp.
Now that being said, a lot of people probably wouldn't notice much
difference. But as I record a lot of very quiet material, I can
certainly hear the difference. Both in noise, and in imaging. The
Tascam has very good preamps, I didn't mean to imply they weren't.
But I really notice when my co-workers try to record loud stuff, guns,
loud cars (again, I'm coming at this more from the Hollywood side) that
the Tascam preamps just don't sound as good. I can't tell you what
exactly is going on there, just that they 'collapse' against really
loud stuff. I suppose they're overloading.
And when recording really quiet stuff, the noise is simply more audible
than with some of my other rigs.
The new Sound Devices 722 is the quietest preamp I've ever heard. I
simply can't hear any noise being introduced when recording even the
quietest stuff I record.
