I might have to disagree a bit here. The tests that we've done, using a
DAP1 and a Sound Devices MP2, and a pair of Schoeps, is that the MP2
preamp is significantly better than the Tascam's. Lower noise, but
maybe more importantly, better ability to handle louder sounds, and
overall better imaging. I find the Tascam's preamps too noisy, if
you're recording quiet sounds, I think you can hear the difference.
But the Tascam's preamps are not bad, they're nowhere near as noisy as
that larger Sony DAT, was it the Pro2 or something like that? The HHB's
preamps are good, but even there I noticed a significant improvement by
adding a Grace Design Lunatec preamp to it.
