The Telinga is the obvious choice of mic to test.
The instrumentation mic would be ok for testing the so called 'focus
globe', but would not be appropriate for truly testing the Telinga.
Testing the Telinga dish with the instrument mic would be like testing a
MKH-60 mic's interference tube with it and saying that's the
characteristics of the MKH-60 mic, if you get what I mean. The Telinga
is what it is and records as it does not only as a result of it's
reflector, but also it's microphones. The reflector only contributes
part of the picture.
I would love to see good polar pattern testing of the Telinga with it's
own mics, both the DAT-Stereo and the Dual Science (which you would have
to test it's two mics independently). That would give a interesting look
into what I know from field recording. It would be very valuable data.
If you have the time it would be interesting to see polar patterns of
the Telinga at a few focus points, particularly with the DAT-Stereo. The
focus can be adjusted for a optimum for a given distance listening by
ear. Say, it's pattern if adjusted for 30', 100' and 250'. Or something
like that.
I don't think you will need to get as picky as one degree increments.
I'm pretty sure we will still be just about as mystified as to how it
records so well.
If you were nearby I'd be right over with mine.
