Evert,
I agree, that we should concentrate our interest more on field
recording. This is what I tried in some of my previous postings.
Hower, if someone states very doubtful theories, I thought it would
be interesting to some of the members of this group to see a
different opinion. I repeat it again and again : MiniDisk
recororders are very useful for field recordings and the audio
quality for listening purposes is great. But it is not suited for in-
depth analysis (this is what Walt mentioned).
Even if you would like to hide such kind of (sectret?) information,
I just added another spectrogram example to the website, that shows
a very 'poor' 8 bit soundfile. You will see, that even that junk
file provides a better spectrographic representaation than the 16
bit MP3 file!!!

I' very sorry, that I did not use ATRAC for this test. However, I do
not have such a device at the moment. ATRAC and MP3 are very
simlilar. Perhaps, MP3 is a little bit more advanced. I used the
same compression factor of 5:1. Therefore, the effect should be
comparable to ATRAC. Of course, ATRAC will peobably show a slightly
different behavior. But you have the ability to run your own test on
your own MiniDisk recorder with the .wav file I supplied. I would be
happy to add your results to this website.
Regards,
Raimund
