As a newbie in nature recording, and eager to learn anything new (and
practical ;-) about the trade, I have read with attention the debates on
microphones, on ATRAC, etc. In my humble opinion, I think Evert is right.
Even though I consider myself really as a guest in this list (having very
little to bring to others for the moment) I think I would certainly
appreciate more practical discussions and experience sharing (Walt has
already given me many practical advices -- both in the group and outside).

Having said that, I have a lot of respect for people who, like Raimund, know
so much about sound in general and the underlying theories. They make me
feel I have a lot to learn...

But I bought a Portadisc... (that was before I joined the group, though ;-)

Unfortunately, I live in Belgium, one of the most polluted countries on
Earth. And beside water pollution, there are very few places in Belgium
where one is not be confronted to sound pollution. I did not realize this
until I turned a microphone on and tried to get a simple, clean recording of
a bird call. I quickly learned that I would have to live and record with
this pollution... I just moved from a K6/ME66 to a second hand MKH416P48
microphone, and I use the Portadisc as a recorder. No matter what I do, it
looks like I can't really get rid of the background noise (there is nearly
always a highway a few km away). Of course, Sunday mornings are better, but
still...

Low-pass filter doesn't seem to be enough... I guess the solution might be
in cleaning up the sound files with a good software (I have Cooledit 2K).
But the results are not always great either (http://www.pca.be/samples/).

Is it something other members of the list are facing as well ? Any
suggestion beside leaving Belgium for Australia (or Canada, as I have a
Canadian passport) ?

I suggest that we keep this technical discussion off list, the
majority of us already knows that MD recorders are great, it is hard
to convince me or others if you compare it by NOT using the device in
your so called test.
THAT my friend is VERY unworthy for a scienctist.

Besides, I do not think our moderator will be too happy seeing this
discussion that has already been dealt with in the past over and
aover again...

Perhaps it will be of much more interest to provide some kind of
fieldjournal ; tell of how a recording was made, and let the
recording be heard.
I would love to get some small course in how to record outdoors.
Anyone interested in sharing their experiences in the field?

Regards, Evert
(This is not meant as a personal attack, it's just that this list is
for nature recordist, not for high tech lab personel that spend all
their days indoors...)
