I disagree. Understanding what's going on inside the box empowers the
user. I think it's entirely appropriate for threads discussing arcane
engineering issues and threads on which way to point the microphone
to co-exist on this forum. If it's above your level, pick up what you
can, ask questions, or go on to another message. There are always
people willing to explain to the newcomer.

IMHO, data reduction/lossy compression systems are a very important
issue to recordists, and worth coming back to again and again;
besides the craft is constantly advancing, so we can't leave it
alone. There are serious and legitimate disagreements about it, and
this is one place where we can hammer out the important distinctions
between theory and practice. I value all the contributions.
