Both of the programs I use for doing sonograms have a calibrated color
scale. I've seen others that did too.
In Soundhack the scale was not published, I had to make a custom
soundfile to find out the relationship.
In Spark XL there is a calibration scale to the right of the display.
It's adjustable for endpoints, so you can examine any part of the dB
level you want in detail.
You are right, mostly sonograms are used to measure the shape of the
call display. Or get timing. Both of which make this rash assumption
that each call is the same and the time is a fixed relation.
