Not that I'm trying to be the devil's advocate here, but that concept is
not isolated to linux. Every operating system has kernel space, and
likely also user space.
Kernel space refers to the memory allocated for kernel operations. User
space refers to the memory allocated for applications. Applications can
only access hardware through the kernel.
Just for future reference, the Wikipedia has reasonably well written
articles on this sort of thing, like shared objects for example.
You might want to try searching there before mailing the list, or even
before googling.
