As someone who is prepared to put my money where my mouth is here. I'd really like to see you guys consider the freebsd license. This board http://www.soc.tuwien.ac.at/courses/projects/dspio is licensed like that.
As a company I can tell you that if I want to put this board into a product and it is licensed under the GPL I have to do weigh the following. How much will it cost me to defend the licensing of my product vs how much will it cost me to pay someone to design one. Off the top of my head I'm betting that designing it is cheaper (for some reason lawyers get paid more :( ).
FWIW, I also hold this opinion for software. I avoid all GPL code other than the operating system itself. So of course the question comes up: If this is free bsd how do people collaborate? Well there are many very successful projects licensed under the bsd like license. For example the postgresql database, all of the apache code to name a few. I personally know of some rather large companies that have embedded postgresql into their products, and they come to the developers for support. Don't assume that because it is free they will simply use it without giving back. In fact the opposite is true. Many of the postgresql developers are being paid by someone to work full time on the project.

kudos as well. Seeing this design and the followup traffic on this list has utterly convinced me that my next board should be publicly released under a suitable opensource/creativecommons/GPL license.

The initial feedback and review would save thousands on the initial spin. "With enough eyeballs all bugs are shallow".

I do like the idea of GPLed hardware if something like the GPL could be made to apply.

It's looking like this board could easily encode and decode theora video as well, without raising a sweat.
