Thanks so much for addressing me individually! I really respect all your th=
orough research & experience. Is this the site I should use to compare mics=
?:

Is there any one mic here (perhaps parabolic) you'd recommend for capturing=
individual animal sounds in the jungle?
Thanks again,
Rich

as well get the recorder with the best pre-amps you can for the money you a=
re going to spend, taking into account any features you think are indispens=
able.

mics are noisy. Unless you have a mic with less than 16dB (A) noise floor =
you needn't worry much. (Check out Rob Danielson's site for more on this an=
d handy charts). This is likely the root of comments like "a few dB of diff=
erence is really not a big deal". In any case technique means a whole lot m=
ore. Get a mic a little closer to your source and it can make a significant=
improvement in signal strength compared to the noise floor.

to have specs that beat (or even match) the existing units. All consumer g=
rade electronics depends on integrated circuitry and a very few Chinese man=
ufacturers. Until the next chip generation that's engineered for lower nois=
e (not a priority for these manufacturers) things are going to stay much th=
e same.

The next step up is a shoulder-sized recorder with phantom and significantl=
y better EIN (something like the Fostex FR-2LE). But you do need quiet exte=
rnal mics for that to matter.
