There's a contradiction in that using peculiar character strings to
denote characteristics really aids finder organizing like we do. I've
pushed it to extreme with a list of 300+ nonsense strings. Some of my
sound file names read like short stories if you know the code.

The goal is for beginners to _start off_ with archive tools with ID
options that relate across a universal database structure. For
recordists with existing, unique systems, translators can convert our
terms into this language. Worst case is our non standard comment
fields like varying .docs and .xls's get imported into the database
as "casual comments" until the translation tools are made. Better
than nothing and at least, in the system, someday.

The best course is to keep using systems we have developed with a
_high degree of consistency_. If you are just getting started-- make
sure you use the _same spread sheet cells_ to carry _the same info_
every time. Don't forget to create a key and maintain a list of
abbreviations and strings that you use.

Works only for some sound file formats in OSX 10.4.11. Flac and
other lossless formats are getting pretty popular in archives. Can
you play flac from the finder?

This is an example of a practice I am guilty of that I need to stop
as soon as possible-- mixing precise info and imprecise info in the
same field. If one were logging/archiving in Reaper, one would simply
insert a marker into the timeline and pull down a "casual comment"
marker window and type if you didn't want to mess with the extra mind
work. That way, the recording is still suitable for database
integration even with sketchy comments.

That step, for me, is to move a couple of thousand media rich .docs
into spreadsheets to have ready for translating into the database.
That time, however, is at odds with getting the new tools up and
going. The Reaper Extensions programmer recently became a parent and
his time is stretched. Next step is to put some cash into it. Rob D.
