Hi Mark and Kenton--
There's a group of about 6 people who are actively making and using
DIY mics based on SASS-P body dimensions in the tradition of Walt
Knapp's & Lang Elliot's mod. Some recent changes to body design may
interest you too: http://diystereoboundarymics.blogspot.com/ . You
definitely do not need to invest in a SASS-P body to get comparable
results.
Its important to get an air-tight, smooth-surfaced seal between the
boundary and the mics but there appears to be a simpler way to do
this. A drill press helps but you can also manage with a power hand
drill and more sanding. ;-) I'm not keen on adding screws to the
boundary surface especially so close to the mics. Check out the blog
for details. I can put anyone's email address on the list we used to
discuss DIY boundary mics. Contact me off-list. Rob D.
