Hi Sean,

Based on the sensitivity (10 mV/Pa) and self noise (14dBA)  of the em-23 th=
e noise output is about -118 dBA.  A recorder with mic preamp self noise of=
 somewhere around  -124dbA and -128dBa would be sufficient to prevent the p=
reamps degrading the output of the mics.  The pre's in the LM-10 are only l=
ikely to audible above the mic self noise of a em-23 in situations where th=
e recording made in a very quiet location needed to be boosted significantl=
y (say 12-18dB or more)  in post.

A number of the budget recorders suggested as a good starting point would m=
eet the -124 to -128dBa preamp self-noise recommendation, and none of these=
 cost anywhere near a Cantar.
