Hi Mike--
Most "shotgun" mics are nearly as sensitive to
the rear of the mic as the front. In a
reverberant room, this often introduces much
muddiness and environmental rumble.
Figuring out ways to get a small omni mic much
closer should pave the way to fewer objectionable
elements in your recordings (not to say they are
horrible!. With a small omni-directional mic at
1/8 of the distance the shotgun mic is now, you
will _greatly_ reduce the percentage of urban
background sounds in your recordings. This
follows the widely-accepted practice of recording
voice with "lavaliere" style mics. You may need
to find a way to keep the birds from eating it
while they grow accustom to its presence. Let us
know what you discover. Rob D.
