Absolutely, and especially since your subject is something you are
obviously capable of getting quite close to and/or handling.

I've never worked with parrots, but would it be possible to fit some
kind of lapel microphone or similar, with a miniature wireless
transmitter?

Agreed. And, if traffic noise was still a problem after the fact, I'd
be starting with some high pass filtering with a steep slope first of
all (before reaching for the more serious noise reduction approaches
mentioned so far); it's amazing how much a bit of high pass filtering
can improve the intelligibility of a recording.
